After January 10, 2023, Windows 8.1 will be considered End of Life/End of Support by Microsoft. These distinctions are eventually assigned to older versions of hardware or software and mean they are no longer supported by their creator and will exist as a completely outdated asset. Continuing to work on EOL assets can be critically detrimental to your business. Here’s what you need to know about Windows 8.1 end of support.
While you can continue to use a PC running Windows 8.1, you need to know that you will be cut off from any technical support for issues and there will NOT be any more software updates (that typically include critical security updates or fixes). Running on EOL assets puts your business at much greater risk!
Increased risk of compromise. No security patches mean as new vulnerabilities or attack methods arise, your computer is not equipped to recognize and deter the threat. Compromised operating systems can lead to data loss, downed applications, and communication gaps.
Lack of features. You already know how quickly technology is evolving and new features can enable improvements in business processes and communications. When you are operating your business on EOL assets, you are no longer getting the updates that include those improved features. Additionally, other software applications will not be updated to maintain compatibility with outdated operating systems. While you can still use apps and games previously installed on Windows 8.1, their quality, usability, and security may be degraded.
Increased downtime. New applications with more complex features put stress on aging computers, resulting in performance problems and system slowness. Performance issues typically lead to decreased productivity from frustrated users.
Loss of technician support. When assets are designated EOL by their creator, they lose technician support resources. Technicians have to learn how to diagnose, resolve, and update based on current versions and emerging issues and attacks so there will not be immediate support resources available to you if you continue to use outdated assets.
Pearl Solutions Group can help you migrate to a supported version of Windows. There are three options for updating. It may mean installing Windows 10 on your current PCs. Windows 10 is not the newest version, but Microsoft will continue to support it through October 2025. You may be able to install Windows 11 on your current PCs, but it is likely if you are currently on Windows 8.1, your PCs will not meet compatibility requirements. You may need new PCs with Windows 11, which will give you the most improved solution that is faster, more powerful, and more secure.
