Thanks to a recently updated tax deduction, the Federal Government now allows you to buy up to $1,000,000 in machinery, computers, software, office furniture, vehicles, or other tangible goods and thereby REDUCING your taxable income on your current year’s tax return. Section 179 allows taxpayers to deduct the cost of certain property as an expense when the property is placed in service. For tax years beginning after 2017, the TCJA increased the maximum Section 179 expense deduction from $500,000 to $1 million. The Section 179 deduction applies to tangible personal property such as machinery and equipment purchased for use in a trade or business, and if the taxpayer elects, qualified real property.
But to get the deduction and help your profits for tax year 2021 you have to act now. The eligible equipment must be purchased and put into service by midnight 12/31/2021. It is not enough to simply buy the equipment. Please keep supply chain issues and delivery times in mind when buying or using Section 179 Qualified Financing, as there are currently no plans to waive the “put into service” requirement.
